With the new year upon us we are embarking on something new for next year. I am sure many of you have heard of personalized learning. We have a very veteran staff that seems lukewarm to the idea already. I want to know from those of you who have implemented this program already what are the positives and negatives. Do not hold back.
Graduation/Promotion Task Force at Hampton High School
Hampton High School being in it's second year of existence added a senior class this year and it has been found that many students eligible to graduate this year are in need of more than 8 credits which could be earned in the fall and spring semesters. I have been tasked by my principal to lead a task force that will identify these eligible students and put into place strategies that will allow them to earn the additional credits and graduate this year. Working with our lead counselor, graduation coach, department chairs, and other members of the administrative team students have been identified. At our second meeting the task force used a variety of data to identify factors that have led to students falling behind credit wise on their path to graduation. These factors could be; academic, behavioral, attendance, or a variety of all three. As the year progresses the graduation/promotion task force will be identifying underclassmen that are in danger of not being ...
How are you implementing it? Are you using a Learning Management System such as Blackboard or Canvas? Our system is adopting Blackboard, which will allow for a greater degree of personalized learning experiences for students, but there's a huge learning curve, and I'm seeing a lot of resistance even in the initial phase of implementation (learning the system and developing digital learning modules). Our Bb initiative is system-wide though, so it's mandatory. What about your personalized Learning Initiative? Optional? School-wide?
ReplyDeleteThe expression you can't teach an old dog new tricks does ring true to some extent. I have found that outlining the benefits that exist for all students will help. The bell curve that exists for students with some excelling and some falling behind can benefit from personalized learning. By allowing excelling students to move ahead at an advanced pace allows for students who still have not mastered a concept additional time and support from the teacher. With that said, some faculty will need more prodding from administration, Personalized Learning Coaches, and professional development days.
