Graduation/Promotion Task Force at Hampton High School
Hampton High School being in it's second year of existence added a senior class this year and it has been found that many students eligible to graduate this year are in need of more than 8 credits which could be earned in the fall and spring semesters. I have been tasked by my principal to lead a task force that will identify these eligible students and put into place strategies that will allow them to earn the additional credits and graduate this year. Working with our lead counselor, graduation coach, department chairs, and other members of the administrative team students have been identified. At our second meeting the task force used a variety of data to identify factors that have led to students falling behind credit wise on their path to graduation. These factors could be; academic, behavioral, attendance, or a variety of all three.
As the year progresses the graduation/promotion task force will be identifying underclassmen that are in danger of not being promoted to the next grade level due to lack of academic credits. We will use the same strategy of grouping these students and placing academic, behavioral, attendance labels on these students.
When the year concludes the graduation/promotion task force will be teaming with our feeder middle school to identify incoming 8th graders that would benefit from the additional supports offered by Hampton High School.

As an educator at Eagle's Landing High School in Henry County, I am very familiar with the challenges you might have at Hampton High School. It sounds like you guys have started the process to identify students who need some type of graduation intervention. However, did you guys wait too long to develop a plan for identifying students who may possibly need some help? I would be very careful with labeling students in any manner and this is no different. Sometimes, our students live up to those labels, Lastly, do not be defined by strategies that you may use now for some students. Many of our students require a various assortment of strategies to assist them in schooling and learning process.
ReplyDeleteOf course; maybe I used the wrong wording but when meeting with students one on one we have tried to identify why they struggle academically. This could be unique to each individual student or some students have factors that are similar to each other. The main point is to identify the main question of, "Why are students failing to earn credits to achieve promotion and later graduation?"
DeleteHello. Chris Jones is actually Shawn Jones. The original posted comment should be up and available. I am still learning this process. Please be patient with me.
ReplyDeleteJohn, I think this is a great intervention process for your school. You have to start somewhere. I like how your team is gradually including more grades in this process. With such focus and strategic planning, students are sure to stay on track and earn the credits they need to graduate on time.
ReplyDeleteIt's comforting to hear that students at the high school level are being identified and supported to help maintain on track progress for graduation. As an educator in Henry County and a parent of a middle schooler in your feeder school, I realize the importance of identifying and finding ways to support each individual student on a level that works for their educational understanding and personal learning needs.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that we did at our school was pulling the cohort report and identified all students who were off track. We generated letters to parents and tried to bring them in for a parent/counselor/admin conference. Often times you will find that these kids are already served in some other area within your building. It is just a matter of making certain those students are documented and we are doing the appropriate follow/up. The end goal is protecting your graduation rate.
