Building Student Leadership

In an effort to increase student leadership at our school we have implemented a Tie Tuesday initiative where the boys come to school with ties on Tuesdays and the girls in pearls on Wednesdays. On these days the students will participate in leadership opportunities where they will do the morning announcements, be a role model for students in the lower grades and those in the lower grades take pictures with our principal and practice appropriate behaviors for their peers. So far the initiative is off to a great start. There is a sense of pride in the students when they come to school well dressed on these days. As leaders we are stellar examples of what good citizenship, respect and responsibility looks like as we visit classrooms during instruction time, as we collaborate with their teachers and parents and the community. We have the ability to influence our young leaders in many ways!

    That is a great idea to instill pride in appearance and how to present yourself in a professional manner. My last school in NC initiated a fraternity sponsored by our young energetic guidance counselor called the Swag Phi Smooth. This group of young men served as mentors to underclassmen and middle school students who were in need of positive role models. They prided themselves as service providers to the community at large and often could be seen volunteering at local events where they could be used in a important way. I would love to initiate something like this at my new school.

    Great idea! We have something like this at our school but not the extant where the students are tied to the leadership aspect of governing the school.

    This is a great idea. Students need to learn leadership responsibilities while in school. Older students also need to know that their behavior matters and schools need to provide opportunities for them to be positive role models for the younger students, many of whom may be their siblings.

    Tonisha, I love this idea! What a terrific way for students to gain important leadership skills! This initiative will surely help students take ownership of their school and build character. Which grade level participates?

    I'm definitely going to borrow this idea! Thank you for sharing this. I think this would be a fantastic tie-in for our PBIS implementation. Scaffolding positive behavior through modeling and developing leadership, and making it fun with the ties and pearls. Very cool!

Graduation/Promotion Task Force at Hampton High School

Hampton High School being in it's second year of existence added a senior class this year and it has been found that many students eligible to graduate this year are in need of more than 8 credits which could be earned in the fall and spring semesters.  I have been tasked by my principal to lead a task force that will identify these eligible students and put into place strategies that will allow them to earn the additional credits and graduate this year.  Working with our lead counselor, graduation coach, department chairs, and other members of the administrative team students have been identified.  At our second meeting the task force used a variety of data to identify factors that have led to students falling behind credit wise on their path to graduation.  These factors could be; academic, behavioral, attendance, or a variety of all three. Specific Role(s) of an AP

In  my school, we have a total of three Assistant Principals. One does curriculum and testing while the other two handle discipline. Is this normal for a high school of approximately 1600 students? I am concerned about the role (pigeon hole) of our Assistant Principals. I would love to learn all of the roles of our APs but I feel like if I became an AP in this setting I would never do anything more than discipline or curriculum. I would love some feedback on the various roles some of you APs play in your schools.

Disproportionate Impact of K-12 School Suspension

Do you agree with the statement that dismissing a student for bad behavior in school often simply pushes that behavior out into the world? Majority of students in the Southern States that are suspended from public schools are black. Some people have referred to some schools that have a high suspension rate as "Prison Pipelines". Many districts are incorporating Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) to decrease the behavior students are typically written up for. PBIS schools have shown a decrease in the amount of students being suspended.  So what are school's role in addressing the diverse needs of our students and families that they serve. We cannot simply tolerate bad behavior in our schools to prevent suspension, but how do we put in supports that allow us to remediate behavior and provide students with a better opportunity?
