Improving School Climate through Morning Meeting
At the school where I am located, the school's leadership is preparing to roll out the responsive classroom approach as a part of our school-wide discipline plan. Currently we are studying The Power of Our Words and The Morning Meeting Book, as well as reading several articles on the importance of addressing the social and emotional learning needs of the students. Though the reading has been interesting, the authors have addressed some challenges that educators face when instituting Morning Meeting. I was wondering....
1) Does anyone use Morning meeting at their school?
2) Any suggestions about the best way to roll it out to the staff? Any lessons learned?
3) How has it affected the school climate and the academic success of the students?
Thanks you for any comments and or suggestions.

I haven't heard about the "Morning Meeting" concept in education, but it makes sense. When I was in the Air Force, we aways had a morning meeting/briefing to start the work day. This started in basic training, and it was consistently practiced throughout my six year tenure. Same thing at Delta after I separated from the military, except it was a pre-shift meeting (since not everyone was on day shift). We discussed safety, pressing needs or concerns with equipment, any noteworthy changes or accolades were mentioned, etc. Thinking about it now, morning announcements somewhat accomplish that, but they lack the interpersonal element and pep-rally nature of a group meeting. Also, actual meetings allow two-way communication, which is very important. Maybe that's one of the key aspects of it, allowing students to truly feel part of the grand scheme of the daily school day. I can definitely see how it has the potential to change/improve school climate, and I plan on learning more about this morning meeting approach. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is a new concept but sounds like a great idea. At my school my principal makes himself available to do the morning announcements where he has inspirational word for the day for teachers and students. Also there are always students sitting with him as they to have a word or inspiration for student and teachers.
