Personalized Learning

As many of you have read already, some Henry County schools are looking to make the jump to personalized 1 to 1 learning. The 1 to 1 learning aspect will be used through technology and it appears to be gaining support in the county and in my school. When we were presented with this movement I had one question for my administrator: How does 1 to 1 technology based learning work with our current TKES evaluations? My administrator could not answer the question. Therefore, if any of you (administrators) are already doing 1 to 1 technology based learning initiatives, how is TKES affected by this activity?

  1. Technology is not the curriculum, however it enhances the curriculum. Teachers would still have to have professional knowledge and demonstrate ability to link content with past and future learning experiences, other subject areas, and real-world experiences and applications. They would still need to plan to meet the needs of all students. A technology program alone does not replace a teacher. The teacher should still uses researched-based instructional strategies and build background knowledge. Data from the program should be used to differentiate instruction and catch students when they are struggling. What do you do when students are struggling? What do you do when students are exceeding the standards? Are formative assessments created in the program, or do they have to be created? Formative assessments data help to create a more personalized learning experience for the students. The teachers must still have a balanced assessments system that includes selected response, verbal responses, constructed responses, and performance tasks and have evidence of student progress. The teachers would be more of a facilitator in this learning environment. I would not expect to see teachers sitting behind the desk during instructional time. The instructional time should be maximized and efforts made to keep students on pace. Time management is a skill that everyone needs in the real-world. Teachers would still need to maintain professionalism at all times and communicate effectively with others to enhance the learning of students.
