What are your thoughts about Kindergarten students being suspended at an alarming rate

Our greatest challenge with behavior exists within our Kindergarten classes. Parents are not very supportive when we ask them to intervene. We have students that hit teachers, spit on teachers, hit other friends, throw chairs, use profanity etc. At the local school we have counselors involved to a great extent before discipline referrals are actually processed. We have SST meetings for behavior to provide a number of interventions as well Once have exhausted our options at the local school and other students are put in a unsafe environment, we have no other choice but to move forward with disciplinary actions.

  1. It's good that your team recognizes that something needs to be done. By all means, put those interventions in place so when the student gets to Middle and High School additional supports can be added without having to initiate the SST process at those levels.

  2. I guess I am going out on a limb with this but...... the judicious use of corporal punishment in such cases hurts the child how? I do not want to recall the bygone era but I do not remember children in my elementary school doing many of things mentioned in the post. However, when parental support or intervention is lacking are suspensions the answer?

    1. Chris I have the same question we try to schedule SST meetings for these students, but many of their parents refuse to show up and refuse to support the process and are in disbelief about their child's behavior

  3. Just curious...is this a PBIS school? If positive interventions and supports are indeed being used, are they part of an overall RTI (for behavior) process? I understand that suspension has it's merits in certain cases, but the ultimate goals is to change the undesirable behavior, and I don't see that being achieved by suspending a 4 or 5 year old.
