Cross Training of Assistant Principals
As the second semester begins and we begin to move forward on a block schedule our principal wants to ensure that all AP's at Hampton High School cross train in areas of curriculum, testing, and special education. My concern is that as the testing coordinator, 11th and 12 grade discipline admin, and observer of 18 teachers I will not have the time to be cross trained in special education and curriculum. If I make the time I worry that testing and assessment responsibilities will suffer. The goal for next year is to move myself to curriculum, special education administrator to testing, and curriculum administrator to special education if that makes sense. Also the other two administrators are in their first year as AP's at HHS so they are still learning the ropes of their designated responsibilities. I will do whatever my principal requests I just worry about moving to early and having our areas of expertise suffer.
That sounds like a valid concern. Considering all of the things that you're currently responsible for, do you feel that certain areas already suffer or that you're struggling (i.e. having to go in early and/or work long, late hours) just to accomplish and fulfill your current job description? I've heard from several APs in my county that this year is the worst ever as far as being overloaded with extra requirements and responsibilities, and many feel that they're sinking! It seems to me like that's a common characteristic of the AP role.
ReplyDeleteCharlie,
ReplyDeleteWhat helps me is that I have a fall break and spring break where I pretty much live at school for a couple of days and build the testing matrix. If I didn't have these days I would be sunk. I am traveling to NY next week for winter break but it does stink that I see my other AP's get to enjoy their breaks while I am stuck in a conference room with my colored expo markers building a testing schedule. Since we are on a block schedule I have to do this twice year.
I am considering applying for an AP position. I ask myself the question, "Why?" It would be interesting to hear your thoughts about why you wanted to become an AP.
