Specific Role(s) of an AP
In my school, we have a total of three Assistant Principals. One does curriculum and testing while the other two handle discipline. Is this normal for a high school of approximately 1600 students? I am concerned about the role (pigeon hole) of our Assistant Principals. I would love to learn all of the roles of our APs but I feel like if I became an AP in this setting I would never do anything more than discipline or curriculum. I would love some feedback on the various roles some of you APs play in your schools.
I understand that concern, but on the flip side (i.e. Elementary AP), you have to do EVERYTHING! I think it really depends on what you prefer...a set and limited job description or the whole enchilada. I had the same question/concern when I was applying for my administrative internship, and I used exactly the same explanation when our cohort met, stating "I'd like to learn gain a broad perspective by interning at a middle or high school, but I don't want to be pigeon-holed into one specific role. So I was assigned to an elementary school, and it's been great, but 4 days into it I can definitely see why some would prefer to be actually be pigeon-holed. Good luck to you figuring it out man!
ReplyDeleteWe have 4 APs at my school and the roles are interchangeable we all handle discipline usually together. We also have a strong counseling team who handles a great deal of discipline. We are each assigned to specific grade levels but we all work with all. We have 1 assigned to State testing, 1 assigned to local testing but we all assist with each. I am primarily the Special ed, ESOL, SST/RTI and Kindergarten AP but I share roles with my with my colleagues we really work as a team to handle whatever needs to be handled at the school from discipline to parent concerns. Discipline is small portion of what we do each day
ReplyDeleteTonisha,
DeleteIt sounds like you are having a very positive experience as an AP. When you first thought of becoming an AP, does your current position fit the idealized version?
I commented about a similar situation at HHS. I am our schools testing coordinator but also serve at 11th and 12th grade discipline AP. During testing twice a year because of our block schedule I have to shut down observations and the other AP's have to tackle my discipline. It can be very overwhelming. The plan is to cross train during this Spring semester with another AP taking over testing next year and myself moving to curriculum.
ReplyDeleteEach AP at my school decided to assume discipline this year in addition to a specific task. The teachers are truly concerned that discipline is lacking although all three are assigned students. I am not sure why there is such a back log etc but teachers in the building are not happy. While admin are trying to do more classroom observations teachers are still concerned that there are no consequences for office referrals.
